Hi, I'm Fiene

A Data Visualization
Designer & Instructor.

Hello, I'm Fiene Leunissen

I believe that design and audience interaction are central to creating functional and clear data visualizations that tell exciting stories and open eyes to new perspectives.

I’m a Data Visualization Designer and an instructor of Data Visualization & Art Markets at Duke University. I’m passionate about telling stories with data to enhance our understanding of the world around us. I work with a wide variety of data sources from those rooted in humanities research and creative industries to public health and more. I have the unique ability to communicate the benefits of using strong design principles and creative data usage to both data specialists and beginners. I primarily work in and teach using Tableau and have strong interest in connecting UX and UI design.

Before starting my career at Duke University, I received a B.A. in Art History and an M.A. in Modern History from Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

My Projects

Visualization Development for the Launch & Scale Speedometer Project, Global Health Innovation Center at Duke University (2021 - present)

Since January 2021, I have been working with Duke’s Launch & Scale Speedometer Project to create interactive data visualizations to provide clear insights into the disproportionate access to COVID-19 vaccines worldwide. Working in Tableau, I developed and maintain a series of dashboards and storyboards for their ongoing data collection project, focusing on vaccine procurement, manufacturing and donation. These visualizations are designed to answer the Speedometer project’s research questions and integrate with the Global Health Innovation Center‘s existing branding. This project is supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Theories & Practices of
Data Visualization, Duke University
(2018 - present)

Having noticed clear need and student interest in visual approaches to data visualization, I designed this course for Duke University‘s Department of Art, Art History & Visual Studies in 2018. Over the course of a semester, students learn key theories and practices of effective data visualization and design. The primary goal of this course is to develop strong visual literacy skills for creating, interpreting and critiquing data visualizations.

Top 10 most visited art museums (personal project, 2021)

In my own work I am usually focused on producing simple, to-the-point visualizations with a specific goal to get across efficiently. Recently, however, I have been experimenting with different modes of visualizing data. I am particularly interested in exploring ways of combining data visualization with the visual arts such that the visualizations themselves become artworks that can be studied for longer periods of time. As these visualizations are examined in more detail, additional information is revealed. In this visualization, I wanted to explore a topic that was very familiar to me from my work on Art Markets, but approach it in an unfamiliar way.

Website & Brand Design for

I am currently providing website construction and branding services for an automotive warranty processing business. This website will be launched in October 2021.

Data Visualization Workshop
for Digital Soundings, UNC Wilmington
(2021)

From February to March of 2021, I developed and taught a series of four, hands-on data visualization workshops introducing Tableau software for faculty and staff at UNC Wilmington. This series was specifically designed and customized to meet the data visualizations needs of participants. For more information about the Digital Soundings series, click here.

Art Markets Instruction, Duke Univeristy (2016-2020)

I worked as a primary and secondary instructor for the History of Art Markets course at Duke University, as well as a facilitator for the Art & Markets seminar. My primary responsibilities included working directly with student researcher to develop original projects studying art markets using aggregate data analysis, developing and conducting works on data cleaning and visualization, and working as a research associate with the Duke Art, Law & Markets Initiative

I also co-authored a paper entitled “Imperfect Data, Art Markets and Internet Research” in 2019.

Creative Industries & The Urban Environment a Bass Connections Project at Duke Univeristy
(2017-2019)

Taking Durham, NC as a case study, this project explored Richard Florida’s Creative Class Theory. As a one of the primary investigators in this project, I led an interdisciplinary group of undergraduate and graduate students in conducting research on the various aspects of Creative Industries in Durham. In addition to leading discussion sessions and workshops on data cleaning & visualization, I tasked with the design of all communication materials and branding for the project.
